Over the week I have been looking up facts, uploading pictures, and displaying facts to our facebook page
1.15 hours
My group got together and we worked out on brochure and flyer. I put together both of them while we all looked up information. We also talked about how we are going to present and what we are going to present. We are planning to get together again on Thursday to make valentines and work more on our project and final touches.

results of the quizzes
The results of the quizzes really shocked me! I did not expect to be a visual learner. Even though they are all really close to the other results I could have had visual came out on top. I will be changing my learning habits to write more into creative ways and try to color coat main ideas and key points. Also try to focus more on topics rather than lots of little ideas as they go.

group project update two
1 hour and 15 minutes
My group and I got together last night to work some more on our project. We began by looking up things we could do. We know Professor Dighton told us we could not make a PowerPoint but we are using the program to make a commercial/slideshow. We start off by showing the 1950s and move into the present time. One of our pictures might be controversial but it goes along with our idea we state a fact about how 30% of homosexual males try to attempt suicide and then show a picture of someone cutting their wrist. We feel like this really puts the message out there about how hurtful a few words to someone might be.

I am so excited about our final project! I feel like this will give us an opportunity to show our creativity besides just writing a paper. How does everyone else feel about this?

Snow Cap Disappearing from Kilimanjaro
Mt. Kilimanjaro a famous mountain in Tanzania is rapidly losing its crown of white snow and ice. This is happening because of the Earth’s increased surface temperature and the increase in the mid to upper-tropical troposphere. Between the years 2000-2007 the glacial icecaps thinned by 6.7 feet. Researchers are now mapping older glacial sediments to see if this has happened before
World Health Organization declares TB an emergency in Africa
August 25, 2005
The World Health Origination (WHO) declared tuberculosis an emergency in Africa. This disease since 1990 has quadrupled in the annual number of people contracting the disease. It kills more than half a million people a year. Tuberculosis is second to HIV/AIDS as a cause of illness and death of adults only 11% of the world’s population has this disease but more than a quarter of them live in Africa. The Regional Committee called for specific actions to address this emergency they included:
•improve the quantity and quality of staff involved in TB control;
•rapidly improve TB case detection and treatment success rates with expanded DOTS coverage at national and district levels;
•reduce the combined TB patient default and transfer out rates to 10% or less;
•scale up interventions to manage TB and HIV together, including increased access to anti-retroviral therapy for TB patients who are co-infected with HIV, and to chemoprophylaxis against TB for people with HIV;
•expand national TB partnerships, public-private collaboration and community participation in TB control activities.
These specific actions came off of the website http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2005/africa_emergency/en/index.html

No crucifixes for Italian schools
Today November 3, 2009 the European court announced that crucifixes will no longer be allowed in Italian public schools. The ban was put into effect because crucifixes violate religious and education freedoms. A Vatican spokesman said “the crucifix was a fundamental sign of the importance of religious values in Italian history and culture and was a symbol of unity and welcoming for all of humanity - not one of exclusion.” The court made its decision by saying, “the crucifix could be disturbing to non-Christian or atheist pupils, rejecting arguments by Italy's government that it was a national symbol of culture, history, identity, tolerance and secularism.”
Tobacco ban wafts into Amsterdam pot shops
“Tobacco ban wafts into Amsterdam pot shops -- but joints still legal” is an informative newspaper article written in USA TODAY, by Jeffery Stinson. He wrote his main idea around that fact that you can still smoke a joint inside a coffee shop in Amsterdam but you had to go outside to smoke a cigarette. The intended auidence would include people who think all smoke is bad for you along with smokers who did not know about the ban. “The new law prohibits smoking in bars, cafes, restaurants and clubs to protect people from secondhand tobacco smoke” and "Under our system, these are two different things," these are both claims to support the evidence. “Amsterdam has 236 of the country's 720 coffee shops, says Mark Jacobsen, chairman of the Amsterdam Union of Coffee Shops.” This shows evidence of field study about the claim given. The article is broken up into single lines broken up by spaces to break up many major points that the author has listed.

farmville
Facebooks Farmville application may be one of the most addicting games I have ever played. The game is basically you planting and harvesting crops to build your farm. You can find and adopt animals for the game on other people’s pages. To earn XP points (which get you to the next level) you can help clean up their farm. I know Facebook has other addicting games do you have any you are addicted to?
Sick
I hate this time of year because everyone seems to get sick! It is so gross because people keep sneezing and coughing all over! I know I went home this weekend and I seem to be getting sick again and it SUCKS! All I want to do is lay in my bed and sleep. I mean my bed is not a bad thing I actually love it, but I would rather be out seeing my friends than being sick in bed..

For the Love of the Game
Esther Maycock is a deaf British football player. Who was selected to play on the 2005 Deaflympics in Melbourne. In 2002 She had a major knee surgery and did not think she would be able to play football again. Maycock blames God for her knee injury but not her deafness. Being deaf she uses sign language to communicate with people. she is quoted saying, “Jesus has helped me to come to accept
my deafness.”

peer review
Does the writer situate the book within a geographic, political, social or some other context? How does it further enhance your understanding of the book and the analysis?
This question helped me the most becuase I did not add context about the book in my own paper

Hair Review
Walking into Hair I thought I knew what to expect. I did not get to go on opening day or even the opening weekend because it was already sold out. I had talked to other people who had went and said it was interesting. Sitting down I heard people behind me not knowing it was the cast. I did not like how they kept going into the audience but maybe because I was sitting on the isle. I also did not like how I could not follow the plot or it did not have a plot to follow. Some of the topics were common sense but others I asked the people around me if they were understand what was going on but they did not. The cast was also kind of hard to hear with the lyrics of their songs. I did like how at the end the cast tried to get everyone on stage to sing and dance with them.

Where's home?
This past weekend I went home for the first time since I left for college. I thought it was going to be great seeing my mom and my dog along with all my friends for the first time in a month. But it was not the same. Home did not feel like home. When I reached home I realized how much I missed everyone on my floor and what they were doing and what I was going to miss out on. I realized that instead of calling the place I grew up in my home I kept saying I cannot wait to go back home (Muncie). Not even an hour after reaching home I was already texting my roommate telling her about my speeding ticket. I’m not sure if it is just me but I feel like Muncie is my new home and home is just not the same anymore.

Ishmael Beah
On Tuesday September 15 Ball State University had an exciting author come to school! His name was Ishmael Beah and he wrote our freshman book “A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Solider.” Walking in I was not sure what to expect because I tried to read the book but did not get very far into it before putting it down because it felt farfetched. When Ishmael began to talk about how he did not include details that he did not remember happening I questioned if some of the things he did put in were exaggerated. This is how I felt reading the book also. I understand that I was not there to experience what he went through but he was drugged and young. You know when you were young how you thought things were always a lot bigger or scarier when you were a child? I am just not sure all of the things he put into the book were 100% correct. On a lighter note I liked how he talked about using soccer to help him overcome what he had been through.

US group helping to fund research in Africa
KwaZulu-Natal is at the heart of the co-epidemic in Africa. KwaZulu-Natal is a providence in South Africa where the new institute for tuberculosis and HIV research will located. This is all thanks to a US philanthropic group who donated 60 million dollars to the research efforts. South Africa on top of being the leader for HIV positive people with 5.4 million is also the 4th highest country with tuberculosis and developing about 250,000 new cases a year. Researchers say that having the institute in South Africa will allow them to “work with higher quality data because we are able to use samples in the lab after drawing them freshly," said Bruce Walker
The Call..
On Memorial Day I received a call from my mother. It started off like every other conversation we had. How was your weekend, what did you have for dinner, ect. Well as the conversation went on my mom said she had some bad news to tell me. My heart sunk to the floor because I knew it had something to do with my family as the “I have bad news” sentence always seemed to go. She told me that my aunt, who was recently divorced out of the family, went on vacation and left her eighteen year old daughter at home. My family knew she always had drug problems but, we just did not know to what extent. “Well,”she said, “she’s in the hospital right now because one of her friends found her on the floor unconscious and called an ambulance.” At the time no one knew why she was passed out. Yesterday we found out that she had overdosed on heroin. My cousin and I were never close growing up because I was the girly girl and she was the tomboy. Over the summer at her graduation party she said, “I love you” to me for the first time. In the back of my mind I kind of feel like this could have been a cry for someone to help her and she was trying to reach to me and I just ignored it. But, on a better note she did go to school yesterday and she has agreed to check into rehab later this week.

Africa's Co-epidemic
If having HIV is not enough to worry about Africa has a new epidemic on the rise called Tuberculosis also referred to as TB. Tuberculosis is an upper respiratory disease in which the person can obtain by breathing in tiny particles of the infection. This disease can be treated with prescriptions in most cases but, in parts of Africa the TB strain is drug resistant. More than twenty percent of the world population has TB but will never show symptoms of it.
The new epidemic is coming fast in areas with high HIV cases. Half of all new tuberculosis cases are also infected with HIV. It has been said to be prevalent in Africa’s poorer neighborhoods but now spreading into the healthier ones. Without treatment of tuberculosis, ninety percent of people infected with both the diseases will die within months.

beginning of my memior
My body trembled as I got up to leave the room. His blue eyes followed me as the scent of his Armani cologne circled my nostrils. I opened the door as the fresh smell of cut grass overtook the smell of his cologne. I felt free again. I knew if I accepted his offer my life would change forever. Part of my childhood would never come back because I would be his. Entering my mom’s car questions started to run through my head. “Am I too young?” “My friends are doing it why can’t I?” The car ride home was quiet as I gazed out the window with these thoughts continuing to run through my head.
Arriving home I began to do my homework as I did any other Thursday night. I sat in my bed going over my vocabulary flashcards for Mr. Modesto’s weekly vocabulary tests. While sitting there all alone a cold breeze from my window blew a few of the cards on the floor. I went to pick them up when a picture of me and my two best friends from elementary school was coming out from under my bed. Again questions whirled through my head until they put me to bed.
The next morning I woke up to my mother yelling to me, “Get up sleepy head breakfast is on the table and I am late to work!” Bam! The door slammed as she was off to work. Taking a deep breath, I smelt the aroma of pancakes and sausages in the air. Putting on my fuzzy black slippers I headed to the kitchen. I am normally a shy person but today was the day it was going to happen I was going to be his.
